Give your assistant somewhere to pick up.
MCP is the connection between your AI client and Knotpad. Once connected, the assistant can read project notes and work with tracked tasks using the access you allow.
Use a client that supports custom MCP connections. Setup varies by client and version, so start with the instructions in your installed Knotpad app.
Connect to your local workspace.
Open MCP settings in Knotpad
Keep the desktop app open. In Settings, open the MCP connection section and choose Copy setup prompt.
Paste the prompt into your assistant
The prompt contains the setup for your running app. Let your client configure the connection and restart the assistant when it asks.
Allow the expected connection
When Knotpad asks, check which client is connecting and choose Allow for the connection you requested. Review the workspace access before starting work.
Ask it to read before it works
Start with: “Read the project brief and recent delivery log. Tell me what is complete, what is open, and what you would do next.”
Use Add to Claude Desktop in Knotpad’s MCP settings. For a client that cannot configure itself from a prompt, use the manual setup instructions in the same settings section.
Keep a record before you close the chat.
Ask the assistant to update task progress and append its result, checks and next steps. That saved record is what the next session can read. Private conversations remain in their original AI application.

Personal Pro and Team Pro include remote MCP access. Use the cloud setup prompt in Knotpad settings and sign in when the browser opens. Your client must support the remote connection method.
Local storage does not make your chosen AI service offline. Its connection requirements and data handling still apply.
